As excitement builds for the highly anticipated 2024 Hip Hop homecoming concert on Wednesday, Oct. 16, evident tension hangs in the air, reflecting the diverse range of perspectives among the student body regarding the choice of headliners, Skrilla Baby and Polo G. While many students are eagerly counting down the days to see these artists perform live, others voice their disappointment, yearning for the nostalgic vibes of past concerts, especially the unforgettable lineup from 2021 that still lingers in their memories.

“My initial reaction to the concert was immediately disappointing,” said Tashawn Rhodes, a senior theater arts major. “Especially with a lot of events being taken away, I wanted more for the concert. I am trying to remain hopeful because you never know who could pop up, but my initial reaction was disappointment.” Rhodes’ feelings resonate with many, reflecting the expectations that come with the homecoming tradition. The desire for a sensational show, filled with surprise guests and unforgettable performances, weighs heavily on the minds of those who have witnessed the magic of previous years.

Conversely, some students embrace a more optimistic outlook. T’yanna Allen-Williams shared her thoughts on the lineup, “I love Skilla Baby and don’t have an issue with Polo G. I know we were looking for a lineup that could top freshman year (2021), but we can’t forget artists can bring friends. I wasn’t too happy that Gunna was the headliner because I’m not a huge fan, but he ended up giving us the best homecoming of all time. You never know who may pull up, so let’s just be hopeful and patient.”

These varied opinions express the emotional rollercoaster that homecoming evokes, particularly for seniors who have had the privilege of experiencing the highs of past events. The anticipation surrounding this year’s concert not only reflects personal preferences but also underscores the broader significance of musical lineups in shaping cherished memories and fostering a sense of community.

The planning of homecoming festivities is a complex and collaborative process that heavily relies on the availability of artists and funding. This coordinated measure is important in creating an engaging experience for everyone involved. Campus Activities Board (CAB) Advisor Marcus A. Kendrick Jr. emphasized the importance of incorporating feedback from the student body.

“In regards to the homecoming experience, there is a committee of students that are brought in to discuss programming, not only the concert but other programs such as coronation, the parade, etc," said Kendrick Jr. "CAB and the Student Government Association solicit questions and answers from the student body and give the student body's perspective regarding what they would like to see for homecoming. The committee overall makes decisions to enhance what the student body and alumni, in addition to faculty and staff, etc.”

As the countdown to the concert continues, the combination of hope and apprehension within the student body showcases a definitive picture of the culture that makes Clark Atlanta University unique. The homecoming concert is not just an event; it’s a celebration of memories, a moment of connection, and an opportunity to create new experiences that will be cherished for years to come.
